I joined AstraZeneca with a BSc (Hons) in Applied Statistics from Sheffield Hallam University and an MSc in Medical Statistics and I.T. from Leicester University after working for a year at AstraZeneca as a sandwich student. During this year I found the work very interesting and challenging and decided that I wanted to work in the Pharmaceutical industry.

I am currently the Global Product Statistician for CRESTOR, a cholesterol lowering drug. I am part of the Biostatistics Group and my role requires that I oversee all of the statistical activity on the CRESTOR project worldwide.
This involves representing AstraZeneca at meetings with Government agencies from around the world and meeting internationally renowned experts in their area of expertise to discuss trials we may run, or to interpret results we have obtained from our trials.
I also have to work with colleagues from other functions, such as Doctors and individuals from the Regulatory and Commercial functions. This includes discussing the trials we should run, what the results of the trials mean and also includes making strategic decisions for CRESTOR.
My job has given me the opportunity to further develop my statistical skills after leaving university. As well as statistical skills, I have also been able develop many other skills by attending various courses relating to personal development or the therapeutic area I am working in. I have also been able to develop as a result of the responsibility I have been given as I have gained more experience. This is particularly true of the opportunity I have had to become more involved in the strategic decision making for the compounds I have worked on.
In summary, I enjoy where I am working a great deal, both from the point of view of the work itself, which I find varied, challenging and motivating and that I am based in a beautiful part of the country, making it a very pleasant place to work and live.
