Catherine from Process Chemistry
I studied at the University of Sheffield and graduated with an MChem in Chemistry with a year in industry.
"I really enjoy working as a Process Chemist. My role involves interacting closely with the other functions in Process R&D to ensure the smooth transfer of the process from the lab to the development plant" Catherine
I was attracted to AstraZeneca by the site locations and reputation. I also liked the idea of working for a large company with good leisure and social facilities. The chemists I met during my interview at Macclesfield made me feel welcome and were enthusiastic about the company.
My job involves developing safe, efficient and robust chemical processes, which will enable the long-term manufacture of the drug. I also investigate alternative, potentially more efficient synthetic routes to produce the drug. After an introductory period working closely with a more experienced chemist I became progressively more independent and now plan and carry out my own experiments. I also problem solve issues that occur in lab work and during manufacture. I spend most of my time planning, carrying out, analysing and documenting experiments to develop processes in preparation for a manufacturing campaign. The manufactures carried out by Process R&D supply material for toxicological studies and clinical trials.
I really enjoy working as a Process Chemist. My role involves interacting closely with the other functions in Process R&D (Analytical Chemistry, Process Engineering and Development Manufacture) to ensure the smooth transfer of the process from the lab to the development plant. As a result I have learn't a lot about the other functions as well as making some new friends.
This year I had the chance to supervise two students. It was an excellent opportunity for my personal and professional development. I enjoyed passing on the knowledge that I have gained during my time at AstraZeneca and helping the students to develop new skills.
As part of the graduate training programme I completed two 3 month secondments in Development Manufacture. The first was in the Large Scale Lab where I was involved in carrying out manufactures on a 20-100 litre scale. The second secondment involved working as a shift chemist on the development plant. Both placements gave me an excellent insight into the role that Development Manufacture plays and the challenges that they face. In addition to secondments AstraZeneca provide me with many opportunities to develop my technical skills through attending internal and external courses and conferences.
