I want to meet Julie from Discovery ChemistryAs an undergraduate, I studied chemistry at the University of York, and got interested in protein structures and X-ray crystallography during my final year project.  I went on to work as a research assistant for the Medical Research Council for a couple of years, before returning to University to study for a doctorate.

"It’s an exciting time for our group right now, as we’ve just moved into brand new, purpose-built laboratories, packed with state-of-the-art equipment" Julie

I joined AstraZeneca straight from my DPhil in Molecular Biophysics in Oxford.  I had already spent some months at Alderley Park carrying out research during my DPhil, since I was lucky enough to be funded by a CASE award.  My work was mostly based in the Protein Science laboratories, but I also spent time in other departments.  I really enjoyed this experience: its a very supportive environment, with excellent facilities and a strong emphasis on team working.  So I was very happy to have the chance to apply for a position in the X-ray crystallography group at the end of my DPhil.

I work as a protein crystallographer in the Structural Biology Group.  The group provides expertise in protein structure to projects based both locally and around the world.  My role is to supply crystal structures of proteins and of protein complexes with small molecules.  My work supports medicinal and computational chemists in structure-based drug design.  Currently I look after about five different projects targeting cancer and bacterial infections.

It's an exciting time for our group right now, as weve just moved into brand new, purpose-built laboratories, packed with state-of-the-art equipment.  My day-to-day work is extremely varied.  As well as doing some practical crystallography, theres presenting and discussing results, planning support for new projects, and even occasionally growing crystals!

Working for AstraZeneca has given me a welcome opportunity to focus on honing my technical expertise in crystallography.  I've been encouraged to attend appropriate external training courses and conferences.  And then to take on challenging new projects to practise my new skills!  Equally I've benefited from internal courses and workshops on topics as diverse as drug discovery and Coaching Skills.  And I'm also learning Swedish as we have a sister group in Mölndal.
